Star middle linebacker Brian Urlacher will miss the rest of the season after undergoing surgery early Monday to repair a dislocated wrist he suffered in the first half of the Bears’ 21-15 loss to the Packers. The procedure was performed by Bears hand and wrist specialist Dr. Tom Wiedrich.

“Brian of course has done a lot for us,” said coach Lovie Smith. “[It’s] big shoes for the next guy that steps up, but injuries are part of the game. He’ll come back as strong as ever next year.”

Bears middle linebacker Brian Urlacher is out for the rest of the season.
Urlacher, a six-time Pro Bowler and 2005 NFL Defensive Player of the Year, had appeared primed to have a big season. He had spent the entire offseason working out at Halas Hall training for the 2009 campaign and not rehabbing an injury like he had the previous offseason after he underwent neck surgery.

“He had put himself in position to have an outstanding year,” Smith said. “He was playing well in the game before he went down with the injury. Even after he injured his [wrist], the competitor in him, he wanted to play.”

Urlacher was credited with three tackles, one tackle-for-loss and one quarterback hit while helping the Bears defense limit the Packers to just 104 total yards in the first half Sunday night.

Urlacher’s streak of nine straight seasons with at least 100 tackles will end. Last year he posted 107 tackles, 10 tackles-for-loss and two interceptions while starting all 16 games. He had 10 interceptions and four fumble recoveries the past three seasons.

Urlacher has been incredibly durable, starting all 16 games for the Bears in seven of the last eight seasons. The only exception was in 2004 when he missed seven starts with hamstring and leg injuries.

Veteran Hunter Hillenmeyer replaced Urlacher in the second half against the Packers and likely will now assume the starting middle linebacker position. Hillenmeyer is a seven-year veteran who started 51 games at strongside linebacker for the Bears the past five seasons. The 6-4, 238-pounder also started seven games at middle linebacker in 2004 when Urlacher was sidelined.

With strongside linebacker Pisa Tinoisamoa also exiting Sunday night's game with a sprained knee, the Bears on Monday signed linebacker Tim Shaw to a one-year contract.

Shaw was selected by the Panthers in the fifth round of the 2007 draft and played in 14 games primarily on special teams as a rookie, registering 14 tackles. After being waived by Carolina last summer, he appeared in three games with the Jaguars in 2008 before being released by Jacksonville as part of final cuts Sept. 5.
