Hello Emma!

I hope you are well! The beautiful barn owl in your avatar made me think to share this photo with you.

My neighbor was hosting a fundraiser a few years ago (mid September) I decided to run and get my camera. I grabbed the camera and headed back quickly, leaving my screen door (glass slider) wide open.

I stayed next door for at least an hour, (didn't want to miss the raffle). As I walk back through the open slider, I can hear my cat howling like she would if she was really pissed off and wanted outside. At this moment, I am already tripping cause the door is wide open, she can let herself out! There is no need for the cat to be mad, she was here alone. I THOUGHT!

I made my way toward the kitchen and as I came into the opening for the living room, I see feathers and fur EVERY WHERE! White and brown fuzzy patches all over the floor, furniture, some still floating in the air!  I COULDN'T BELIEVE IT ~ THERE WAS AN OWL INSIDE FIGHTING WITH MY CAT!

I believe the owl & my kitty were hunting the same gopher or field mouse ~ who knows... I live on 3 acres so there is a lot to hunt on this property! Anyhow, the owl fluttered up onto the valance over the window. I snapped some shots of the bird there.

During all of this craziness, I realize that no one will appreciate this like my neighbors kids. They had been inquiring all summer about the owl sightings I usually had at night. Every night they would hear the owl come out at dusk and start hunting. There was this unique sound the owls make when hunting. It sounds like the Headless Horseman is coming up the next block.

WHOA -  I am off on a tangent ~ back to the story...

I was so obsessed with these barn owls that I joined an OWL FORUM which is run out of New Zealand and created the moniker OWLY MCBEAL,~ which is now what all my neighbors call me because of all of my Owl updates. Anyhow, I run next door, grab TJ and McKenna, their Mom is right behind us... we are booking it back to my house. We get there and we can not find the owl. It must have flown out because it is no where to be seen and my cat is under the bed in the guest room and will not come out! She wont even look at me. Just stares at the wall, pissed off!

So the excitement is over, the kids walk back to their house, I start cleaning up, kitty is plotting her revenge ~ no more owl!

As I am finishing up I decide I need a drink! I open my cupboard and there is the owl between a root beer mug and wine glass. Looking at me like, "Please just grab your glass and close the cupboard again"

I called my neighbor, had her bring the kids back over so they could see the owl and take a picture for themselves to take to school. Joy, their Mother, grew up on a farm so she took the initiative to get the owl back out to her family. She grabbed a medium sized towel from the linen closet and wrapped the owls wings up in swaddle. It took about 30 mins for her to keep the owl calm and still enough to grab it. She walked outside to the Apricot tree where the owls were training, and undoubtedly this little owl had trained there in my backyard in the year/years prior.

This is a Western Screech Owl ( they are little ~ this one is full grown she was teaching her owlets how to fly in my backyard that night. Every year they go from the Apricot tree to the fence line and back. There are no street lights, it is very dark where I live and although I have a barn out back, the Barn Owls that I track at night live somewhere nearby just not sure where yet.

This is the Headless Horseman sound I was referring to... I hear all night during the Summer/Fall months. It is called Twittering or Kleak Kleak sounds.
