  • Why do people get misunderstood when they make a thread in a forum or make a post, and what type of people misunderstand these threads and posts and why??

This is a very vast question to ask so i reckon replies will come in vast supply too!!!

EDITED: Just a General Question smiley

  • I am guessing you been misunderstood? Could be what you want to say ain't coming out right when you post it buddy. There is always somebody on the same wave length and understands what you're saying. If  you are meaning no one agrees with your point of view that is par for the course for an open forum.

  • Nope - just a general question as a whole i will edit above post to make this clear smiley

  • I think it's because "a tone of voice" cannot be shown in the written word even when adding a few appropriate commas and even then, the written words can be misconstrued to mean something totally differentt.

  • I agree with Blue, the channel of communication often changes the message slightly, especially when you communicate in writing because you can't use non-verbal means.

  • Even in conversations people listen through filters and they hear their own version of what has been said. So, no wonder those things happen in writing.

  • Completely absolutely positively agree with you Mark! People tend to conclude their own interpretations of a what is written for many reason. I think it has a lot to do with what perceptions people conclude especially about a regular poster. Once that impression is imprinted in their minds there is no changing it.

I think for the LCB forum every regular poster has felt misunderstood at one time or another. We are a community of people from all over the globe. Some are triggered by sensitive issues that somehow relate to their own situation. Some are just in a bad mood particularly a gambling forum where luck was no where to be found.

Speaking for myself i use to have a very thin skin and when someone would get angry at me or take me wrong i would fall apart. It does require a certain amount of bravery to post because we never know who will pounce on us.

I have learned a lot through the years and Zuga has been a wonderful guide for me to not be so affected and to learn that not everyone is going to agree or even like us no matter how hard we try.

I have to say though that the written word is still a great venue of expression and sometimes it can be easier to express than on a verbal level.

  • I agree with what's been said. All we have to go on are the written words. Sometimes what's meant is exactly what was written and sometimes it comes across entirely wrong. Unless someone is blatantly going at you, ignore it.

Posts are just people trying to make conversation. If someone walked up to you and starting talking would you look at then like they were stupid? Of course not. No post is unworthy of being read and we're all doing our best to chit chat with each other and get our thoughts written down. smiley

  • ok, so what about the second part of my question, about what type of people misunderstand and why would they want to misunderstand that thread or post.

This is merely to get an idea of what people think i am just curious smiley

i do agree with what people have replied with smiley

  • "Type of people"....hard question and I don't know the answer.

    blue

  • Like i basically said in my previous post I think there are many reasons. There is no clear cut black or white answer where everyone is clumped together.

  • ok smiley

  • Thank god for smilies. The most basic post or email can come across as curt, defensive, offensive or any other number of ways, whether the poster intends it or not. Sometimes it comes down to the reader and their mood at that given moment, personality type or preconceptions, other times by the writing style of the poster.
    A basic example could be:

    A: hi, how are you?
    B: fine
    C: oh no, what's wrong?

lol...pretty much anything could be read into that one word..uh-oh, no elaboration, something's up, he's not fine, he's too busy to chat, oh good he's actually fine.....chats and emails have caused any number of unintended consequences from ambivalence, disregard, mistaken attraction, to out and out fights

  • and thank god, some are so nice that they haven't forgot that once in their life they have been a newbie too.. smiley
