  • We are nearing the 10th anniversary of the September 11th attacks on America. I saw a program last week with video clips of the "jumpers". It was like being brought right back to the day. Those images disturbed me most. I can't imagine the heat from the fire or simply the terror that drove them to jump. Oh and the sound that was captured when they landed. It had me in tears.

I remember where I was and what I was doing when I heard that the first plane hit. I was working and someone came back from a break telling us all about the first plane. We didn't know what to make of it at that moment. A while later, someone else comes back from a break telling us about a second plane. A second plane?!? It was then that we all knew something was very very wrong and this was no accident.

I remember going home at the end of the day and watching the news coverage. I was online and saw the first image of a person jumping from the building on the Yahoo homepage. That image stayed with me.

A week or so prior I had a dream. I was walking down a hill with thousands of people that I didn't know. Odd I know but they started falling all around me. When the terrorist attacks occurred I couldn't help but think back to that dream.

We are strong and those famous words hold true, "We Will Never Forget"!

Share your memories of the day, thoughts and feelings and of course honor those that we've lost.

  • You so hit the nail on the head Froggy.  Your thoughts and feelings on that day are very similar to mine and I'm sure, many others.

I remember being off from work on holiday on that day and I just happened to have the news on.  I was just pinned to the spot in horror when I saw the building on fire and the "breaking news" rolling across the bottom of the screen.  I just remember thinking OMG what a terrible accident, how could this happen and then I saw the 2nd plane hit the other building and realisation dawned that this was no accident.  I was still pinned to the spot standing in front of the TV just so shocked, upset, sad, in disbelief, scared for the people within the buildings and those standing outside.  Then the first tower started falling like a deck of cards and I really just couldn't think of anything but those poor people trapped inside.

Like you, I saw a program last week about the fireman and the lives that were taken - some 350+ firemen bravely lost their lives on that day.  Those brave firemen that survived were telling their stories and you could see the total and utter pain in their eyes as they recounted what happened, bodies falling behind them as people had jumped out of windows and people coming out of the building, in front of them.  Life and death in one scene.  The pain and grief in their eyes brought me to tears and just made me remember the feeling of being hopelessly helpless.

They don't believe they are heroes but they truly are and were.

  • I remember watching CNN, BBC and other satelite channels that day. And i saw when 2nd plane hit the tower.

This date will be remembered as one of the most infamous historical events in modern day history. The day when human hatred, fanaticism and ignorance caused the loss of so many innocent lives.

Discovery channel will have a special about 9/11 to commemorate that day and i also heard National Geographic made an interview with G.W. Bush which will be aired on the 9th.

  • I was getting ready to go to the hospital,my daughter-in-law was in labor and I had the tv on.I was already a nervous wreck with my grandson on his way, when I saw what as going on...OMG.I'm sure I was like alot of others and thought accident...until the other plane hit!! All those poor people and not knowing what was next, very scary indeed.I'm at the hospital watching this horror and thinking I'm gonna be a Grandma but today of all days...oh man!!So for me it is weird..my grandson's birthday and one of the most infamous days in history falling on the same day.

  • Gone so fast. I was at one of my accounts at the bar doing a shelf restock and the tv was on. Liquor  orders didn't matter anymore. Stayed at the bar all afternoon and watched the news.

  • I think about that day quite often and how it changed America forever.  I too remember exactly where I was and what I saw that morning, unfolding live on TV before my eyes.  I watched the plane hit the 2nd tower and will never forget ALL the photos and video images I saw that day as well as the days following.  I could not tear myself away from the television for nearly 2 days, I was so incredibly sad and numb.  I remember emailing one of our local TV stations 2 days after the attack, asking them to please, air something other than the 24/7 live coverage of the aftermath because we all needed to see something GOOD...positive, cheerful and to just get our minds on something else for a short while....the depression was awful not only for me but for so many people in my community.  But what I saw in the days...weeks after that horrible days also made me so proud to be an American.  SO many Americans came together as a UNITED people and helped each other, setting aside their political, religious and personal beliefs.  I wish...I pray....we could find our way back to that patriotic UNITED nation again because so many of us have forgotten that day and how it nearly tore us apart.  The sacrifices which so many have made and continue to make, to allow our freedoms and keep us safe.  "Thank you" just isn't enough some times.  I will be watching the those shows that commemorate that day...and pray for all those that were lost.

There are some touching TV programs recalling 9/11 on NGEO.

  • That day will be remembered throughout the world and i don't know whether to say it seems like it happened ages ago or it feels like it just happened yesterday......

I do recall seeing people on the streets carrying flags, draping them across their vehicles and flags proudly displayed in front of homes like wounded warriors who refused to falter. And it was as if for a brief moment in time there was true unity among the American people. We were all in this together and it didn't matter if you were white, black, Hispanic or any other culture. We were all one..........we were Americans.

That day shaped and changed our world forever. I think the aftermath is as devastating as the day itself. It is as if we have lost the our innocence and faith in humanity. We now live in a world of restrictions with new rules and a new passage to our freedom.

I know it has changed me and the way i now feel. It opened my eyes to what i took for granted. I became more passionate for my country and appreciate this great land i come from.

I saw for the first time the hatred that exists not only for the hideous crime committed that day but how other countries gloated at our suffering and the disdain for the US in general.

It gave me a better vision of all the countries who has suffered from blood shed and a greater compassion for it.

No, i won't ever forget that day because i changed who i am and awakened my soul to the world around me.

  • I remember I was watching "Good Morning America" and Charlie Gibson was talking to someone in  the other tower when suddenly there was a massive bloom of fire and then the man being interviewed yelled "Another plane has hit the other tower!"

When I went to work (The immediate grounding was 2 hours into effect) I heard no jets flying and I worked right below the take off corridor for PDX at the time. I looked into many eyes and saw fear and anger.

The mood was so somber for the whole week...A day truly which will live in history.

  • I'm not an American and I've never even visited the U.S. But I surely remember that day... I was upset before it happened but for a trivial reason: I went to attend the Romanian Tennis Open that day and had to leave the arena because it was raining ceaselessly. To my frustration the rain had stopped by the time I got back home so I was preparing to watch one of the matches on TV. But the broadcast was stopped for an announcement: a plane had hit one of the WTC towers! I switched to CNN immediately and then... you all know what happened. What we have felt in Romania about the whole thing was summed up brilliantly the next day in one of the newspapers by a veteran journalist, here is the article:

    Editorial from a Romanian newspaper

    "An ode to America"

Why are Americans so united? They don't resemble one another even if you paint them! They speak all the languages of the world and form an astonishing mixture of civilizations. Some of them are nearly extinct, others are incompatible with one another, and in matters of religious beliefs, not even God can count how many they are.

Still, the American tragedy turned three hundred million people into a hand put on the heart. Nobody rushed to accuse the White House, the army, the secret services that they are only a bunch of losers. Nobody rushed to empty their bank accounts. Nobody rushed on the streets nearby to gape about. The Americans volunteered to donate blood and to give a helping hand. After the first moments of panic, they raised the flag on the smoking ruins, putting on T-shirts, caps and ties in the colors of the national flag. They placed flags on buildings and cars as if in every place and on every car a minister or the president was passing. On every occasion they started singing their traditional song: "God Bless America!".

Silent as a rock, I watched the charity concert broadcast on Saturday once, twice, three times, on different TV channels. There were Clint Eastwood, Willie Nelson, Robert de Niro, Julia Roberts, Cassius Clay, Jack Nicholson, Bruce Springsteen, Sylvester Stalone, James Wood, and many others whom no film or producers could ever bring together. The American's solidarity spirit turned them into a choir. Actually, choir is not the word. What you could hear was the heavy artillery of the American soul. What neither George W. Bush, nor Bill Clinton, nor Colin Powell could say without facing the risk of stumbling over words and sounds, was being heard in a great and unmistakable way in this charity concert.

I don't know how it happened that all this obsessive singing of America didn't sound croaky, nationalist, or ostentatious! It made you green with envy because you weren't able to sing for your country without running the risk of being considered chauvinist, ridiculous, or suspected of who-knows-what mean interests.

I watched the live broadcast and the rerun of its rerun for hours listening to the story of the guy who went down one hundred floors with a woman in a wheelchair without knowing who she was, or of the Californian hockey player, who fought with the terrorists and prevented the plane from hitting a target that would have killed other hundreds or thousands of people. How on earth were they able to bow before a fellow human?

Imperceptibly, with every word and musical note, the memory of some turned into a modern myth of tragic heroes. And with every phone call, millions and millions of dollars were put in a collection aimed at rewarding not a man or a family, but a spirit which nothing can buy.

What on earth can unite the Americans in such a way? Their land? Their galloping history? Their economic power? Money? I tried for hours to find an answer, humming songs and murmuring phrases which risk of sounding like commonplaces. I thought things over, but I reached only one conclusion.

Only freedom can work such miracles!

  • Such beautiful, heartfelt posts by all.  It's a day we all will remember.

9/1/2001 was our 14th Wedding anniversary.  I started the day cleaning my shower drain with a metal hanger. I do live the life of luxury.  I took my daughter to the bus stop and one of the dad's said 'something hit one of the twin towers'.  Nobody knew at that point what was going on.
I returned home and turned on the TV.  I immediately called my parents, who live in another state, and told my mom to turn on the TV.  We stayed on the phone for hours watching the horror unfold.

The romantic evening planned of course was cancelled.  It was not a day to celebrate nor was it a day to be away from your family.  We took the kids to a nearby restaurant and somberly sat and watched the TV's.

Bless those that died that day.  Bless the volunteers.  Bless the families and friends left behind.

Remembering the events still brings tears to my eyes.

I was watching a program about the CSI employees sifting through remains.  I was touched when a medical examiner said a 4" piece of skull was found with something red burned on it. (It was a figher fighers helmet burned to his skull).  She was touched that 4" piece of skull was wrapped in a Flag and presented to the family with the same reverence as a full bodied firefighter.

The author's name is Cornel Nistorescu and this is probably the best article he has ever written.
  • That article was amazing. Thanks Johnny!

  • Did anyone have a chance to watch the documentary on A&E this morning, "102 Minutes That Changed America"?  It made me cry all over again.  My husband is in law enforcement, his son a local firefighter and our son-in-law also a firefighter....after 9/11, I developed even more tremendous admiration and respect for the sacrifices they make "just doing their jobs".  They are and always will be MY heroes....not celebrities or sports figures...THESE people as well as those in all branches of our military are the real heroes.  God Bless America.

  • Yes.  I cried too.
I've been watching the specials everyday.  Very touching.

10 years ago today... America came together.  We were united in a way no humanitarian, speech or leader could unite us, we were united because of the terrorists.  They took so much from us but our resolve, caring, help for strangers was amazing.  It makes me very sad that as time went on, people are back to normal.  On 9/11/01 nobody saw black/white, tall/short, jew/christian.... they saw Americans and heroically gave of themselves.
If each of us gave a tiny fraction of what thousands gave on 9/11, can you imagine what kind of America we would have today and forever?

You are so right.  Heroes are those you listed, not celebs, sports figures or singers.  It's the everyday people who put their life on the line for others...that is a TRUE hero.
  • GOD BLESS THE USA

  • I was in MInnesota had woke up early that morning, i was sharing a home with some people.. i remember it was about 9:30 i was watching TV, it didn't even get to me yet i thought i was watching a movie and thinking what movie is this? Is was real.. it was really happening.. i woke up everyone in the house and told them to turn on the TV..first feelings i remember.. my heart was so sunk into the pit of my stomache i had my hand there to keep it from falling further, my eyes were glued, mouth slightly opened to the sad position, all i could think about was "WHY?" no legitimate answer could come to me..

To all the bravery and sacrifices those people made that day..to be here to commemorate this thread.. makes me really know just how extremely lucky we are
