Yes both drtheolen and myself are from Serbia. We are actually an old mates, our friendship goes way back to first day of elementary school.
Gunny, it is funny you thought Im from OZland, as I did spend a lot of time with Aussies and really picked up on their slang and expressions. Granted that I also picked up a lot of American slang thanks to Lips.
I would say learning the 2nd language, in this case English, is always steady and ongoing process. I personally learn something new every day and Im never satisfied with my own knowledge of english and always strive toward perfection.
naturally my line of work allowed me to significantly improve my english skills, and sometimes days can pass that I dont say a word of
serbian. And at times i even find it easier to say something in english rather than in my native tongue ( which is quite concerning when I come to think of it

).
I still remember the days when i used to think about what Im gonna say or write, first in serbian, only later to word it in english. But practice, repetition, reproduction of wording and expressions and real time conversation really helped me get comfortable and fluent in english.
With all this said, we do have english as a mandatory class in our elementary and high schools. And with ever present movies and music and world wide web it is really hard not to know at least some english expressions.
P.S.
