Hi Gang:

Just a little post to remember those that perished in the Titanic disaster.

Shortly before midnight on 14 April 1912, four days into the ship's maiden voyage, Titanic struck an iceberg and sank two hours and forty minutes later, early on 15 April 1912. The sinking resulted in the deaths of 1,517 of the 2,223 people on board, making it one of the deadliest peacetime maritime disasters in history.

The high casualty rate was due in part to the fact that, although complying with the regulations of the time, the ship did not carry enough lifeboats for everyone aboard. The ship had a total lifeboat capacity of 1,178 people, although her maximum capacity was 3,547. A disproportionate number of men died due to the women and children first protocol that was followed.

The RMS Titanic was an Olympic-class passenger liner owned by the White Star Line and was built at the Harland and Wolff shipyard in Belfast, in what is now Northern Ireland. At the time of her construction, she was the largest passenger steamship in the world.

In 1955 I came over from Belgium with my parents on the Maiden voyage of the Rotterdam and half way into the trip the stabilizing bar broke off and we had to return to England. It was the middle of winter and I remember being out on the deck with lifejackets on. I was only six years old but it still gives my nightmares. When I say the movie Titanic I had a panic attack. I know what i went through was not as bad but I makes me realize what those poor people must have felt.

mamrone...I read your post, and I got goose bumps.  Your ordeal must of been terribly scary.  To experience it as a child would make it even worse.

I  truely appreciate your sharing it.

PMM what is funny looking back at it I saw my first movie on the ship that I had ever seen and it was Pinnocio about a little boy lost at see eaten by a whale. It was an awful experience leaving our whole family behind setting off for a new land and then have that happen! i remember being out on the deck and the waves were so high they went over the ship, I'll never forget it, but God had a reason to keep me alive so I was lucky
