It is a slow day in the small Saskatchewan town of Pump Handle and streets are deserted.

Times are tough, everybody is in debt and living on credit.

A tourist visiting the area drives through town, stops at the motel, and lays a $100 bill on the desk, saying he wants to inspect the rooms upstairs to pick one for the night.

As soon as he walks upstairs, the motel owner grabs the bill and runs next door to pay his debt to the butcher.

The butcher takes the $100 and runs down the street to retire his debt to the pig farmer.

The pig farmer takes the $100 and heads off to pay his bill to his supplier, the Co-op.

The guy at the Co-op takes the $100 and runs to pay his debt to the local prostitute, who has also been facing hard times and has had to offer her "services" on credit.

The hooker rushes to the hotel and pays off her room bill with the hotel owner.

The hotel proprietor then places the $100 back on the counter so the traveler will not suspect anything.

At that moment the traveler comes down the stairs, states that the rooms are not satisfactory, picks up the $100 bill and leaves.

No one produced anything.

No one earned anything...

However, the whole town is now out of debt and looks to the future with a lot more optimism.

And  that, ladies and gentlemen, is how a "stimulus package" works.

Chillymellow, I get you point, but I just have to ask.  The local prostitute offers her services on credit?!?

Funny story, this actually happened two different times at hotels I was working at: 1)  A man called in a prostitute but his debit card was maxxed out so in turn she called the police.  We were called out to the room but instead of facing the prostitition charge he pretended to act drunk and managed to get himself kicked out before the police arrived.

The other time, (years ago) I was recently hired to help balance the nightly receipts when the whole staff was fired, from the general manager on down. Turns out my supervisor had a "visitor" he was allowing to stay free for six months in a room in turn for her "services".  And the books "magically" paid for her room. I even met her once.  She called my boss "Daddy-O"

Back to the stimulus scenario, unfortunately the government debt gets bigger as it lends money to help prime-pump the economy, then someone raises their prices or interest gets bigger and the government again provides another stimulus.  It's a vicious cycle

JosephKennedy- I hate government bailouts.  Mostly because they never benefit me, but that's beside the point.  I think if a big business is going to fail, they should.  Otherwise our economy is based on "funny money" you can never cashout with - play all day, get jackpots, raise the balance to a decent amount, still worthless.

Money is like the treasured debri in the wind, it swirls before our eyes, as we reach our hand out to grab its whisped away and lands in the neighbors yard who don't deserve it, we'll climb the fence to retrieve it and get shot.. lol
