  • Is it really superstitions and nothing more.. or are they real or real only if you beleive?

Superstitions are mostly considered to be irrational beliefs associated with the existence of particular mysterious forces.
Every nation have some sort of superstition in its tradition; some of them are so important that they even acquire main traits of modern pop culture.

    Walking Under Ladders
Walking under a ladder has been considered bad luck for centuries. Ladders have been considered the spiritual ascent to heaven. So the rule was "Do Not Disturb the spirits who were using them!"
If a ladder is leaning up against a wall that forms a triangle.  And in the old days a triangle symbolized the Holy Trinity If you really must walk under a ladder then here are the rules:  Cross your fingers and Spit three times through ladder rungs.
A leaning ladder was also thought to resemble the gallows and so by walking underneath a ladder, you are playing out your own execution

    Broken Mirror
Broken mirror superstition origin; broken mirror = broken soul as souls were said to dwell inside mirrors.
We have all heard that break a mirror and you get 7 years of bad luck, right? The ancients believed that any image of a person contained a portion of that person's essence.
This is why vampires can't see themselves in the mirror--they have no soul. Anyway, believing that their soul was in the mirror, breaking a mirror meant that a part of the soul would not be able to reunite with the body. Obviously, without it, a person would be in for some bad luck.
The Romans believed that a person's health and fortune changed every seven years. Celebrity Pamela Anderson has this fear known as eisoptrophobia

    Spilling salt
Spilling salt superstition origin? Judas Iscariot spilled salt at the Last Supper, toss over the left shoulder if spilt.
Salt was believed to be a powerful magical substance. So any spilling of salt was considered a dangerous omen. Salt's ability to preserve foods from decay is the reason it's a symbol of eternity and immutability.
Thanks to Judas Iscariot, spilled salt is associated with treachery and lies. If you are unlucky enough to spill some salt, never scrape it up! Instead, toss some over your left shoulder to counteract the omen of bad luck. Celebrity chef Giada De Laurentiis fears the spilled salt superstition

    Opening Umbrellas indoors
Opening umbrellas indoors: The reason goes back to the ancient beliefs regarding sun worship. Since umbrella's shade us from the sun they were said to have received magical powers. Therefore opening an umbrella inside out of the sun's rays is considered offensive to the sun god Ra and would leave everyone in the house unprotected and cursed!

    Empty Rocking Chair
The empty rocking chair superstition came from Ireland, it is said that one should never rock an empty rocking chair, it is considered bad luck and should be avoided because it is believed that the action will bring death to the family or invite demons to sit down.

    Splitting the Pole
When your walking in a group and one half goes to the left and one goes to the right of the pole it is conisderd bad luck. Why? Not sure as there does not seem to be a true origin of this superstition. KInd of stumped when it comes to this one,but I do know what to say when it happens.
If you split a pole you are supposed to say bread and butter. Why? because bread and butter "go together." The utterence gives the ritual power as an affirmation of togetherness

    Black Cat
Black Cat superstition origin: Middle Ages, black cats = witches familiar; spit if a black cat crosses your path right to left. .
The black cat in folklore has been able to change into human shape to act as a spy or courier for witches or demons. When the Pilgrims arrived at Plymouth Rock, they brought with them a devout faith in the Bible. They viewed the black cat as a companion, or a familiar to witches. They viewed the black cat as part demon and part sorcery.
A black cat crossing your path is good luck in Japan. A black cat crossing your path left to right is good, right to left is bad.

    Purse on the Floor
The Purse on the floor superstition is an old one which says that you shouldn't keep your purse on the floor if you want to have money coming in. With your purse, the problem is that you are both physically and symbolically putting your money on the dirty floor down by your feet, which can be interpreted as disrespecting wealth.
Celebrity Star Jones avoids putting her purse of the floor at all costs

    Friday the 13th
Origin of friday 13th superstition, Paraskevidekatriaphobia: 13 at Last Supper on a Friday or Loki crashed a gathering of 12 gods in Valhalla.

    Stepping on a Crack
The fear of stepping on a crack goes back to the old fear of letting the soul out of the square with the four corners symbolic of balance and perfection.
Step on a crack and you break your mothers back.

Theres a few that i won't do, split poles, opening umbrellas, and walking under ladders, i've always been afraid to break a mirror. I never knew about the rocking chair or the purse on the floor, those are new ones to me.

I'm like most i don't beleive.. but i do just in case lol

  • I just heard about the "Purse on the floor" a while back when i was out to lunch with a friend and i went to set my purse on the floor and she about gasped! I told her i guess i shouldn't put it on the floor anyway because it will get dirty and haven't since.

    Lips
  • That list is awesome,i have heard them all  cheesy. Thanks for sharing where they came from. wink

  • I don't believe in any of those but it's interesting to find out about their origins.

  • That was an interesting read Imagin. The purse on the floor and the empty rocking chair are new to me. I'm superstitious in some ways and if I see a crack I will avoid it.
