  • First off ive been in this very middle and upper class nieghborhood for almost 5 years and im very quite, infact i dont know anyone here (at all). I keep my grass cut hedges trimmed ,never play loud music or have any wild parties even though i have grown teens in the house. For some reason one of the neighbors keeps calling the city on me.First it was for a tire that someone threw out into the woods by my property(u had to be superman with xray vision to see this thing).I had my brother to pick it up and we hauled it off.Next i parked my car on the grass on the weekends so the teens could play ball without breaking my van windows and i got a visit from the city again.Niow i have to pay $130 dollars because i stored some old mattresses in an outside storage and used a tarp to hang over the the front. It wasnt the mattresses it was the tarp i got sited for.Im to thepoint where i want to move. This is not my house i rent and i dont know the codes here.I asked code inforcement for a book so i will know whats legel and not and he pulled out a book thats 10000 pages long (no jk).He said i had any questions to call him and he would come and take a look. What would u do huh :'( sad

  • I can understand your frustration rena, although we here have no major rules, we do have some folks in the neighborhood who whine and nag about everything. If the grass is a little bit to high they put a note in my mailbox that they see my grass everyday and it needs to be trimmed. We have three cars and a motorcycle and if a car is not parked neat or nicely, ding dong, the doorbell goes and some "i have nothing else to do in my life" old whining man or women stands on my doorstep if i can please park my car in a proper way. We trie to live by the rules and there is nothing more we can do, but there will always be people nagging about anything they can find to nag about..........i would certainly not move rena, another neighborhood, the same problems i think............

  •           Hey Rena,  that's not in Florida by any chance is it?  Neighborhood Associations can be real hard asses down here (and a pain in one too).  Wow that's a tough situation;  I'd seriously consider "Am I better off or worse off by living here and could I find a less stressful alternative".  The thing about neighbors is you're kind of stuck with 'em.  So if you don't get along things can be difficult and frequently problems escalate.  I'd seriously consider all options.  Good luck Rena.

  • thanks so much hun,i wish they would just knock on the door or put a note in the mailbox sad

no its in georgia but its real stressful
  • Neighbors are an awful creation aren't they. Why don't they mind their own business if you're not bothering anyone. It's not personal obviously because they don't know you. I bet you're not the only one. Just keep doing what you're doing because you've done nothing wrong. You have to be happy where you are. If you like living in that house then stay. Don't let them push you out.

  • There is nothing worse than nosy neighbors or neighbors that will pick on you for no good reason at all. You are a much better person than me because i would have never removed that tire hidden out in the woods. Makes you think if it was so hard to see the one that complained was mostly likely the one that put it there in the first place.

Neighbors can be very strange and the slightest thing can tick them off and they are on a mission to make your life miserable for no good reason. Not knowing who the culprit is makes it tough because you can not try to reasonably talk to them and come to some kind of understanding.

I would try as best as you can to ignore them and just tell yourself you are better person than they are and obviously they have no life to be so preoccupied in making your life miserable. Don't let them win and take it with a grain of salt.

I know it can be nerve racking and unsettling. Maybe next time there is some sort of complaint you can tell the authorities what is going on here and you feel harassed and ask that they speak to the neighbors about this and maybe even come and talk to you first in the future.

  • In the famous words of Robert Frost, “Good fences make good neighbors.” And that is so true. But rena, as froggy said do not let them run you out of your home. Rental or not, it is your home and you have the right to live there without harrassment. If you move, you will have neighbors there too.

We have just moved back into a house we rented for 7 years and left about 5 years ago. The one thing that made us hesitate was the neighbors we had before on one side. They would call the cops on us for watering our yard and some of the water going under the fence and getting their dirt wet. And other insanity like that. Fortunately they have sold their house and moved away in the interim. But, when they had first put a For Sale sign up we wanted to put a little sign on it that said, "See neighbors for Rebate!"

And sure enough in the house we bought and moved into there were neighbors that reported everything we did just as they did here. And like you we did nothing that should have been of any concern to anyone.

  • I remember we had a neighbor who was a pissy one. They'd complain to my Mother about noise (one car I had, had a broken exhaust manifold very loud on start up and a 66 chev pu with "Glass Packs") and the lawn and the hedge and generally alot of stuff. Then they had the GALL to ask if they could come onto our property to pick some of the apples we had from 4 trees.

My Mother said "Get a lawyer to write a "Hold Harmless" contract and I'll think about it" Never heard from her again.

Anyway, we just ignored them from then on. I'd suggest you do the same. You'll always have someone complaining about something, don't let it get to you. Hold your head up and ignore the barking dogs.

  • I just spoke to code enforcement to ask them to mail me something so i would know the different codes in my area and they will get something in the mail to me.Its sad this will cost me $130 to clear up but God Bless whoever did it and i hope they got something out of it.I do understand that if someone doesnt take care of their property the homeowners property value goes down, but i just dont know why they didnt let me know by knocking on my door or putting out a notice instead od calling the city and then if i didnt comply with whatevers being violated call the city sad :'(

  • Some people have nothing better to do Rena.  Serial complainers are unfortunately all ove this planet so wherever you go, you will surely find another one.  Stay put, keep your head up and don't let em get to you.

As for the $130 charge  - surely you are given some sort of notice/amount of time to rectify the problem before they can start charging you for stuff?

  • This is a very stressful situation Rena.... but I think you shouldn't move out, you will find that kind of people anywhere you go. Stay strong because you know you are right and that you didn't do anything wrong.

I still think you should have had 7 days for each item that was a problem before a fine was made.

I hope you are feeling a little better after the positive comments you have received in this thread.

  • i do feel better and thank everyone for the support smiley

  • Rena,I'm so sorry you are having a difficult time with your neighbors!!
They sound unreasonable and with nothing better to do then complain to the city.

Don't let them get to you!!
