  • Hi Guys and Dolls,

Just heard about a survey that was talked about on the radio and the results were interesting. The question was.........

If you were offered a promotion at your job with a nice pay raise would you turn it down because you had to work with a boss or people you didn't like or stay at your current position with lesser pay and be happy?

Most people said they would turn the promotion and pay raise down.

    What would you do?

  • I would never take a job that I don't enjoy. Well, if my monthly salary would be like $100k then why not - I would work few years and earn enough to live without working but spending 8hrs/day, doing things that you hate just to earn some more $.. nah.

  • Tough question Lips.  I probably would take it if what I was currently earning wasn't enough to support my family and the pay rise was enough to make a real difference.  I think that would be the only reason I would take it.

  • No easy answer here. someone once told me, its not just black + white, u got grey too and inside the grey u have different shades also.
I would only do it for family if they really needed it
But I do find that people who like their job are more balanced in general.

  • Even though they know that happiness is more than just a good job and money, in reality people do what they think it's right even if it brings more stress and negativity. They are not thinking about what it is that they actually want .

I like to think that I would reject such job offer or even quit.

  • I think it depends on the financial circumstances. If I can make it all work with my current job then I would choose to be happy over a raise but if I was struggling then I would probably be able to get along with just about anyone to get the job done.

  • wait da min! Lips what exactly are you implying here exclamation  tongue wink

  •               Here's the way I look at it.  I made good money in the hospital I was at,  loved the people I worked with,  didn't like the people I worked for.  Big difference.  I always said I would take a slight cut in pay to be happier  (Of course this is provided that one's salary or wage is enough to live on, etc.)  in my job  and not have to deal with the managers we had.      Our department would get managers or directors that were so intimidating when you came in it was actually affecting my health.    I was getting anxious and depressed every time I had to go in.  ( 3    twelve hour day shifts a week).    Bottom line,  always choose happiness.  If not,  it could affect
your health,  your family,  it just goes on and on  and even though you may make more money,  you'll be miserable.

Now now boss you know dang well i adore my job and adore you as our leader. You are da bomb wink
  •               Thank you Lips,  Ha Ha exclamation  I just got it;  wow the Bongo's a little slow on the uptake !  I'm sure Zuga is a wonderful boss exclamation  LMAO !

  • It is crucial to work what you like, but sometimes there are offers we cannot refuse because of good salary. It is always the best solution to find an optimal for both salary and satisfaction.

  • Happiness. I left 100k a year as a mortgage consultant to go back to school so that I could wrestle mean dogs for a living. But you're not sacricing if you're following your calling in life and you've come to terms with and know the implications of your decision. Now I work as a Registered Veterinary Technician and I make a difference for these animals every day. They can try to bite me, urinate on me, poop on me, I don't care. At least it's not a human!

I respect this. It is really nice to see someone has character like this.
  • Eight years ago I gave up a job paying $32.50/hour.  I worked from home 4 hours a day, 5 days a week.  I loved the job, but couldn't take the stress working for the woman that hired me.  It was her own company and basically I did everything to keep it running.

Yes, the money was great, but I couldn't take dealing with her anymore.  She was a mad woman with no common sense.  It was her way or the highway even if her decisions were truly wrong.

I got used to living on less money.  It was worth it for my sanity.

So my answer is no.  I would not take the promotion if I wouldn't enjoy my work day.

  • Depends on the raise I guess, but normally I would turn it down and stay happy smiley

  • @ Jodi - happiness is working with pets God bless you!

@medtrans - I don't blame you one bit. You made the right decision because your happiness is more important then that kind of stress.

  • Ok so ima gonna be a devils advocate here, and say i would take the money.

Once i would make enough then i would do what ever would make me happy

  • But when is it enough money would greed step in and jeopardize your happiness?

  • That is a good point Lips... I guess it comes down to your character...

They do say money doesnt buy happiness, however i have to add that money does make your life easier...

So to choose between a life with no money but a job that makes me happy, and a life with money and no happiness at a job ( which does not negate being happy in other aspects of your life ) , i would take the latter.

  • At the end everything is about the money. We can't leave without it.

  • Happiness>Money. Most important thing is to do what you like, profession vise. Never do things you dont like. Example: Your going to law school because your parents want you to, eventho your whole life your dreaming about becoming a doctor. That will make your miserable for the rest of your life. People saying that money is buying happiness, but if your spending half of the day doing something you dislike, you wont be happy.

  • Well if you have to choose happiness or money when it comes to a job I think when it boils right down to it i would have to choose money. Jobs all about money. Happiness can fill a lot of things, but your belly is not one of them

  • Money lays the foundation upon which happiness rests, otherwise that happiness breaks upon the rocks of reality! smiley

  • Johnny Karp hit the nail on the head, it really would depend just how big the raise was - afterall, I think if I was being paid enough to significantly enhance my life outside work, I might well be happy enough putting up with a little upheaval - and whose to say that you wouldn't adjust to the new environment soon enough anyway? Generally speaking though, I do put happiness at work before everything else, but you are working for money at the end of the day, so money has to be a big consideration as well.
