  • i have seen something similar smh where some people will go to the store buy food with foodstamps then pull out a 100 dollars to pay for lots of beer  8'| i thought i was not the 1% but after reading these posts and knowing how hard i work, save no matter how sick i get i cant help but feel something as far as the system and how it works. sad

  • ALSO, everyone says.....i have tried to get a job flipping burgers.....all i can say is you need to try harder.....go talk to the manager,... responsible, well mannered people who truly want a job will be hired on the spot if they REALLY TRY.  If the only reason you keep getting turned down is "YOUR OVERQUALIFIED"  then you probably need to figure out the real reason because managers oftenly use that phrase as an extremely easy out when not hiring an individual.  Prove your positive demeanor and worth in the interview and you will be hired on the spot!

This is totally distasteful. Lua described that where she lives 60% of the young people are unemployed. You think ALL OF THEM could get a "burger flipping" job by following your advice? If there are more people than places to be the whole "try harder" philosophy is nonsense. Everyone is trying hard and yet necessarily a high percentage will get nothing. And this is what protests are about. I visited a protest camp in a big German town lately, those people were busy all of the time, believe me. Passionately and hard working all day, all the superlazy individuals you somehow cannot stop talking about wouldn't get involved with this.
  • Hey dabigdog, I´m overqualified to flip burgers because I have too many  degrees which turned out to be useless. When I was a student I worked delivering pizzas and as an intern but now the situation is pretty fucked up, at least in my country.

THE KEY TO GETTING A JOB IS TO FIGURE OUT WHAT THE 40 %  OF THE PEOPLE WHO ARE EMPLOYED HAVE TO OFFER.....FIGURE IT OUT....SOME PEOPLE ARE OVERQUALIFIED AND SOME MAY BE UNDER QUALIFIED.  what do the other people bring to the table for their employers??????  are they just lucky or what?
  • If there are not enough jobs. And one tries sooooo hard and harder and harder as you advice (however degrading this may be). And then he makes it and gets a job. Then this automatically means that another person will be jobless. Because there's not enough for everyone. That's why you're advice is nonsense. It CANNOT work for everyone. When there's jobs for 40% only, one's success is one or two others' failure. Saying "try harder" to everyone means as much as "fight against each other" in this case. But why should people agree to the rules of such an unfair game. They can also choose solidarity among each other and try to change the rules together. That's what the protests in Spain are (you were talking about Spain lua right?).

  • maybe it is time to relocate then huh????  i thought they were protesting because the government realized all the benefits they were getting were unsustainable so the economy crashed and blah blah blah.......please face the facts.....you are hoping to get something for nothing.....you did not earn what you want......you just want it.....because... figure out a way to make yourself better instead of sitting around choosing solidarity to try to change the rules.....MAKE YOUR OWN RULES!!!

  • More facts, folks.  In 1980 13% of all government spending went to social programs.  Today, it is over 16%.  Are things 23% better?  No!  There is no evidence that an increase in social program spending sees an equal decline in need.

What people need are jobs.  JOBS!  And the current government under Obama is holding that back...way back.

This is wrong. If you know any economic scientist who puts up such a theory, or newspaper articles which implicate that this is the way economy crashed, please show me.

    [quote author=dabigdog link=topic=20140.msg197394#msg197394 date=1322179991]MAKE YOUR OWN RULES!!!

You've just been speaking about doing everything just to get a dirty job, about doing everything just to fit into the employers' demands. What about this is "making your own rules", please?
  • Yep, I'm talking about Spain. The funny thing is that all the young people are relocating, they are going to Germany and UK because there are jobs there and they hire Spanish university students. I was an pair for a year in the US, obviously immigration laws get in your way unless you go to the EU. However, I don't think the solution to the problem is taking all the human capital out of the country, this will only make worse the situation.

The country isn't shitty because of too much benefits that we can't afford. They gave millions to banks when the crisis started so they wouldn't go bankrupt but the banks aren't giving loans to encourage spending, they spent foolishly the money from taxes in so many stupid things and not really social benefits, they stole all they could and a little bit more so now we basically have to pay for an incompetent government + greedy markets that love to bet against the Spanish debt.

I don't demand that everything is handled to me in a silver platter but I'm not lazy, I have studied, I have worked as an intern (even for free) and also in shitty jobs, I speak Spanish, English and some German, I'm willing to prostitute myself for a job but like me there are a lot of people here and they aren't now enough jobs. I believe I have the right to protest and try to change things for the better.

  • this is really a great topic but i think we will never agree one way or the other. This debate has been going on for years.Im sorry lua for your troubles and i truly hope things get better. It was hard for me to find work also but thank god i did.I have a son thats getting ready for college and i have saved every penny i could to help him out.Hopefully he will make wise descisions and not have to work until his feet bleed but if he has to im hoping jobs are out there for him.He wants to be a game designer so if the video games keep being created and upgraded just maybe he will do good.He also is thinking of joining the marines.I am thankful he isnt planning on living off of me.Between 2 familys opening a savings account(that once the money goes in it cant come out until my son reaches 18)we have saved quite a bit since birth for his future.I have mixed feelings on this topic but i do know that everyones situation is different.I dont mind paying taxes to people who have a future plan in mind and are not lazy.I dont like paying for the ones who wont work even if a job fell in their laps. >:( Lua my advice is dont ever lower yourself because if pride is all you have then stand on that.I know things will get better my dear. thumbs_up

  • lua....
Since when is getting a loan a right?  Yeah, the banks are tight on the credit now, but why should they be forced to give loans to UNcredit worthy potential customers?  Keep in mind, this was a BIG part of the recession...banks lending money TOO easy.

And, I have aske based on your statement...how willing are you to "prostitute yourself?"

  • ok, this will probably get some angry responses, but prostitution should be legal.  If consenting adults want to exchange money or other products for sex, then what's the problem.  The only problem the government has is it is way too hard to tax and control.   If my children were in dire need and I had run out of other options, then I would do what I had to to see they had what they needed.  It is all about being resourceful.  Use what you have to get what you need

  • wmmeden...you know, let me start a new conversation thread on the prostitution topic!

  • The prostitution thing was a joke, humour doesn't translate well wink For me working for free (which I have done and I know a lot of people who have to do it) is kind of prostitution.

Getting a loan is not a right BUT if my government takes money from taxes to give it to banks so they don't collapse and keep the economy going so they can keep giving loans and people keep buying stuff so companies don't close..... This system only works if people keep spending, if the money stays put no one wins.

And also I find it funny that the government can use the money from taxes to rescue banks but then they start talking about cutting social benefits.

  • lua....Well, I have lots of disagreements over how Bush and Obama decided which banks got "saved" versus the ones that did not.

But....and you won't like this....banks are KEY, repeat, KEY in creating jobs.  Welfare/social programs don't create many jobs.  Banks employ lots of well paid people AND their activity in a free market economy is directly related to many, many jobs being created and sustained.

  • The Worlds definition of Prostitution

    World English Dictionary
    prostitute  (ˈprɒstɪˌtjuːt)

    — n
    1.  a woman who engages in sexual intercourse for money
    2.  a man who engages in such activity, esp in homosexual practices
    3.  a person who offers his talent or work for unworthy purposes

    — vb
    4.  to offer (oneself or another) in sexual intercourse for money
    5.  to offer (a person, esp oneself, or a person's talent) for unworthy purposes

[C16: from Latin prōstituere  to expose to prostitution, from prō-  in public + statuere  to cause to stand]

Being paid none or not enough money for services or talents that are worth more then, having to do or give more for a little amount for reasons of survival, being that having no choice other than... OR over paying for something that is worth little or nothing..

  • I didn't know there were that many ways to define prostitution....

Doc, I never said that the banks shouldn't have been rescued, I understand that banks are key to maintain this economy but one of the reasons they gave money is so they could give credit to companies and they wouldn't close and the unemployment wouldn't be as high as it is.  The banks kept the money from our taxes and didn't help incentive the economy, I just don't like the way they gave money to the banks in Spain because it was no strings attached and some banks are really politicized and full of corruption.
