  • Where i live the cost of a pack of cigarettes keeps going up and up. Right now it is $10 a pack and a carton will cost you $80!

I remember when smokers said once they go up to five bucks a pack they are quitting but are still paying ridiculous prices.

How much are you currently paying and do you have a cut off price where you refuse to pay and will quit?

    Lips

  • $5 a 20  pack here, cheapie brands
or $20 a carton of reservation smokes

  • Wow that is cheap! I think its time to start rolling your own smokes here!

  • we spend about $20 a day, buying 4 20 pks of no names (lower end brands..ie pall mall)
reg packs go about 9 bucks to 10
reservation cartons (200 smokes) can be as low as 8 bucks to over 60 depending on the brand ya like

  • Around here they are between $6-$7.
I think in Cook Co.IL,they are around $12!! WOW!!!

As far as a price limit for me,it doesn't matter.I quit once and started again and I'm NOT going thru that again.I know they are not good for me but I've done worse!! Shame on me!! embarrassed laugh_out_loud

  • $2.6 here in Serbia for a pack of Marlboro's . Gonna be $3 by end of the year ( so they say )

  • I used to smoke branded cigarettes like Dunhill, Benson & Salem, but ever since I changed over to a local brand, now at $8.70 per pack of 20 (local currency), I can no longer smoke other brands. This current brand suits my tastebuds and is slightly cheaper than branded ones which retail at just over $10 per pack of 20.

What price is the limit? When my wallet smokes!!!  laugh_out_loud
If cigarettes become too expensive in the future, I'll start rolling my own!  grin
Give up smoking? That's like asking me to stop playing slots...not if I can help it!  laugh_out_loud
But I will definitely stop smoking when the right time comes...  wink

  • About $10 a pack of 20 here and that is a cheaper brand.  I would like to quit this year at some point.  I have cut down since I stopped smoking indoors though.  I will not pay £8 a pack.

Struth that is ultra cheap for Marlboro.  They are about £8 here which is around $12.

    Greedy Govts here.

It is cheap compare to UK, US, CA etc.  But you gotta keep in mind that an average wage here is $500-$550 a month.

  • I pay $4.99 for a pack of Marlboro here in Orange County, CA ( USA ) and $ 53.00 for a carton including tax. I don't think i will ever quit, have been smoking for 35years. So if the price keeps going up, I will still keep buying them. I enjoy smoking. laugh_out_loud

  • $8.75 here in Philly...but it depends on where you buy em.  I smoke benson & hedges and when i can't find or afford b&h i buy marlboro lights 100s...they are cheaper....like $7.00

    i guess i will stop when i stop enjoying them...but i still enjoy my smoke...  <3 <3 <3

nothing like a fresh cup of coffee and my ciggs!

  • the cigarettes i buy are £6.40 a pack, Berkeley Superkings, i really want to stopp too, but its hard, and yes i certainly wont want to pay much more but its hard to say what the limit will be, i probly would just start making them myself, but even that doesnt save us much nowadays either, cos the price of rolling tobacco has shot through the roof too sad

    LuckyRJ

  • About $4 for Camels, have u checked into ordering online?

  • In Denmark about $6.50-$7 for 20 cig. 100 size. King size a litlle cheaper.
  • those berkeley crud ciggies are $3.99 here.  you can get little winchester cigars for about $2.00.  Or you could buy a dime bag and actually get something for your money...

  • We pay around 4 dollars for a pack of cigarettes in Romania and the price is set to go up each year, probably until the end of time. I don't have a cut off price but I guess I will probably quit at some point.

  • In the middle of Kansas USA... pack of Marlboros $4.60  which is the most expensive brand they selll around here actually Newports (if they're available) might be little more but only a buck or so...

I guess everything is relative.  Those are very low wages.

  • Where i'm live its between $8-$13 for kool's superlongs depends where u buy it. I use to smoke a pack a day, so that would be about $ 275 or so a month. 8 months ago my friend let me try this thing this thing call e-cigarettes. The good thing about it u can smoke it anywhere cuz its not smoke it vapor and i spend about $20 month. They are trying to tax it here and if they do than i"m screw and probably go back to smoking cigarettes.

I've never tried those before...are they any good kynettie? Can they replace cigarettes for diehard smokers? Do you get any taste smoking it? Questions...questions...questions...?! wink
  • I have one of those - looks and tastes like the real thing when you smoke it and it does kill the craving.....but it also makes me cough a lot!

I have heard on the news that some of these e-ciggy's can do you more harm than a real ciggy.  Read up on them before you buy.

    blue

  • Geeesh! That's not good at all blue!

I would cough whenever I smoke another brand...so I guess those e-fags would make me cough like hell too. No point jumping out of the frying pan and into the fire! wink

    Afi4wins

i have no problems with mines. Sorry Blue about yours. Afi4wins if you want to know more about it you can PM and tell you where to go. Where i live its a big hit now lots of people are starting to use it cuz its much cheaper than cigs. Like i was saying i use to smoke a pack a day and this was 8 months ago. I don't have any craving. The only bad thing is that the vapor which is a liquid product that contains nicotine.
  • Thank you kynettie. I will PM you when and if I decide to give it a try. wink
Right now, nothing beats real fags...hehehe.

    Afi

  • Well, here in Vancouver WA it ranges from $6 (Cheap brand) to about $8 for Camels/Marlboro....  I buy a bag of tobacco (About $19 with tax). 5-6 books of rolling papers ($1 a book, 1oo papers Tops, not those crappy zigzags) and a roller (I buy one new roller every 4 bags I buy) and that's what I get by on for about 3-4 WEEKS....

Once in a while (When I go to OR to gamble at the bars) I buy the Camel 99's for $4.50-$5 depending on the bar.

  • We have a "smoke shop" up the street from where I live where you can go in, tell them what brand you smoke and they will make a blend especially for you.  They will even roll one for you so you can try it and if you dont like it they will keep tweaking it until you find what you like.  When they have the formula right you can stay there and roll your own carton with the little machines that they have.  Actually, as far as cigarettes go, this is better for you than the ones you purchase in the store because there are no chemicals in the paper or the tobacco like in manufactured cigs.  I find that I cough less.  The rolling part takes a bit of time until you master it, but after that its a breeze to get in and out.  I can roll an entire carton in about 20 - 30 minutes.  wink

  • That "smoke shop" sounds pretty cool, wish I had one nearby smiley

  • I'm guessing it's a lot cheaper too trpschick?

I wish we had something like that here.  We do have smoke shops that sell loose tobacco but you can't go in and roll them there.

    blue

  • I gave up 2 weeks ago smiley  I think mine were £6.45 for a packet of  20 JPS Blue. I now smoke ecigs, not quite proven track record for health but cant be worse then normal cigs, and definately cheaper smiley

  • too much, $7.50+ and a heart attack.

  • 4.4$ Marlboro in Latvia exclamation!

  • ive order me an electronic cigarette ( re-chargeable one ). It has little liquid capsule where the nicotine is stored. You can actually opt for various flavours and strength.

i really need to quit laugh_out_loud

  • Those are the ones I have Zuga. I use the tobacco high flavour at the moment which is working well for me, ive tried the molboro ones which I found were not strong enough, and the coffee one aswell whcih was quite nice, but needed the tobacco taste replacement in these early stages of giving up..lol

  • Good luck zuga, i am also thinking of ordering myself a e-cig too, but i dont want a cheap one, i want one that will be a good substitute smiley

I tried the electronic alternative, didn't like it too much to be honest. It's nice that you can use it anywhere and that you don't need a lighter or an ashtray but in the end I gave up on it and returned to the good old traditional cigarettes. I know, those will probably kill me.
  • I was a hardened smoker, 20+ a day...can't see myself going back to cigs now. I use the rechargeable one, I think its important that you find the right one for you. The good thing about the rechargeable ones is you can try all different strengths and flavoured capsules, if you find a good supplier (i have a shop down the road) they will let you try a sample first.

  • ok, well i officially started today, i got an e-cig the e-lite model from a shop today and it seems to be working at the moment, it has been 8 hours since i had a smoke.

will let you know how i do and good luck to you too, this thread also kinda made me think about doing this e-cig, good luck to zuga too and nice to hear mamt35, i hope this will work for me, but i think it will, it is just about reprogramming the brain with your normal routine instead of having a normal cig to just use the e-cig, i think the first few days will be hardest, we will see

    LuckyRJ

  • Good luck LuckyRj, its been 2 weeks tomorrow for me, can't say its been a big change, im happy with my ecig, I dont know which you have, mines from a shop down the road, it doesnt look like a cigarette, its a black cartridge and rechargeable and you screw on the attachment that has the vapour in it, I have 2 so that ive constantly got one recharging lol.

  • 0.80$ medium pack of 10 cigarettes and 1.50$ the pack of 20 cigarettes! Marlboro dont cost to much here in Colombia :p

  • mine are $6 and change a pack and my b/f are under $5 cause he smokes Marlboro red 72s which are cheaper. I will for sure stop if they ever get to $10 a pack. that's just crazy I think. lol smiley  thanks

  • lets put things in a different perspective.

Say an average pack is $4 and you smoke pack a day.  thats $120 a month. I would rather use that money to gamble cheesy

Where I live it's $8-10 a pack. I use to smoke a little more than a pack a day, so I would have to buy 2 every other day. Now that I use my (Inferno) that's the name of mines e-cigg. I spend only $20 a month for the bottle of liquid. Now all that money$ I'm saving goes to gambling which is a lot of money$. Now I have to find something for my gaming habits.

  • awesome, just an update, i slept and woke up had coffees, and starting the process of reprogramming my brain, and so far soo good, its now been 20 hours since i had a normal cigarette, so far i say it is working, i do see my anger getting a bit worse though, but other than that, i am ok.

Oh and i know its been just 20 hours but man, already i can breath easier and my mouth and nose has already started to pick up tastes and smells i never even remembered was actually there when i smoked, its very very strange, i like it, but things are tasting different to when they did when i smoked but that is a normal side effect, it is said that you will find things you liked when you smoked u might not like now you are a none smoker and vise versa to the things you might of hated when you smoked, you might end up liking now you don't smoke lol. we will see i suppose tongue

i will try do a search on the internet for things to help my anger and maybe go see my doctor if it gets a bit worse,

    LuckyRJ

  • just another update, it has been 2 days now, and to be honest, i just think i am over the worst now, it has actually been easier than i thought

if there is any smokers out there, i seriously recommend the e-cig they really do work, it is strange to get used to at first but seriously, the benefits outweigh the negatives

    gl all

    LuckyRJ

  • Gonna be pretty honest here, I tried to quit smoking couple of times now, would succeed it with ease every time if only I wouldnt simply love to smoke cheesy

I dont have much problem with addiction itself, everytime I need a smoke I just go to sleep and in few days there is no addiction anymore. But on the other hand, main problem is that I have no honest desire to quit smoking and until I do, doubt Im gonna be succefull in quiting.

If I would quit smoking than I should stop doing things which for me goes well with a cigarette like drinking a strong morning cofee, drinking beer, gambling (yes I do smoke a lot when I gamble) etc. At this moment I simply cant imagine life without all those things cheesy

LuckyRJ, from my experience, be persistant with quiting just few more days (worst a week) and you shouldnt feel the physical need for a cigarette anymore. From that moment onward its just a matter of honest desire I think.

  •               CBG has probably the best answer I have seen!!!! laugh_out_loud      But seriously,  while I respect everyones right to smoke or not,  working in the medical field; specifically respiratory... I must say that in America  smoking costs us billions and billions in health related costs,  lost productivity due to illness,  shortened lifespans, asthma attacks, cancer related deaths, heart disease.    Sorry guys,  don't mean to be a downer, for all of you trying to quit I think that's great and I wish you the best of luck.

  • Well done LuckyRJ smiley

  • I wish everybody luck who tries to quick. I know its not an easy thing to do and the withdrawals can make you cranky as all hell. But the only thing i don't think is fair is gouging the consumer with ridiculous prices on a pack of cigarettes.

I can understand not invading non-smokers air in public places but smoking is still legal and you can smoke outside in open places and in the privacy of your home.

Is it fair to jack up the prices so high to force smokers to quit? That is what i don't think is right.

  • Is it fair to jack up the prices so high to force smokers to quit? That is what i don't think is right.

It's quite simple in my view. Smoking is addictive and as soon as the tobacco companies understood that they started making more and more money. Then governments understood that too and started taxing tobacco as a luxury good. And now governments are making more money per cigarette than the tobacco companies. Of course there are high health costs involved but I think overall governments are making good profits from this.
  • Government's Advice : Smoking is hazardous to your health! (so stop smoking!)
    Government's Ace-up-the-sleeve : If you don't, I'll make even more money!!! laugh_out_loud
