I recently saw that movie Horrible Bosses. It wasn't the best movie but it did get me thinking. The entire movie revolves around three men with bosses that they want to kill. Each is horrible in their own way.

I tried to think back to all the bosses that I've had and I don't think I've ever had a boss that I truly couldn't stand. I've had one or two that were just plain lazy. Some bosses expect employees to have no life outside of work. I guess it takes all kinds.

Have you had a boss that was mean or just didn't take responsibility for anything? Better yet, were you or are you a horrible boss?

I once worked for awhile at a bar, and was fired for having a party one night around midnight and inviting some friends who also were bar patrons.  That lady was also otherwise pretty horrible.

The last boss I worked for hired me and I was supposed to have a supervisor and two people working under me.  When I arrived there were no other people.  I also found their instructions totally incomplete and lacking in enough detail to get the job done.  I also found problems with their software that was causing incorrect data.  I was in charge of their state reporting.  I asked for help and asked for help and asked for help, and did all I could.  I kept asking for a review so I could address my issues.  I was so happy when that finally came about, but was met by security and escorted off the property with them claiming I was totally incompetent in every area.  I just looked at them and said, oh, so that's the way you are going to play this?  And collected my unemployment because I had done nothing wrong.  THAT was a horrible boss.

I have been dying to see that movie but didn't find a chance to see it yet.

Talking about a horrible boss...I had this one boss who was like a unpredictable weather.
No one could guess what her mood would be like and she was someone who had to be the center of attention and she made sure of it with demanding.
I don't think I have ever met someone so fickle.Laugh out Loud

I am a horrible boss.  I employ people during a time of high unemployment.  Therefore.....

1. I insist employees come to work on time.
2. I insist employees not leave early.
3. I insist employees leave the drama AT HOME!
4.  Don't ask me for a raise for your so-so work.
5.  I don't buy the sudden "Im sick, I can't come in today" excuse.
6.  I don't tolerate you using company time on your cell phone, texting, or Facebooking.
7.  Bringing your bratty kids to work is NOT cute.  Leave them home.  I am not impressed.  (I have 4 and I don't bring them to the company.)
8.  Don't ask for an advance on your salary.  I pay when you have earned the money.
9.  I will treat you fair, but don't expect special favors.
10.  I am not a charity, I am a business with a goal of making money.  Keep that in mind in everything you do while you are at work.
11.  I will reward superior work with salary increases and bonuses, but I will fire you for bad, or even so-so performance.
12.  I don't feel I owe you a job.
13.  I don't do "business casual."  Put on nice, neat clothes to work.
14.  If you have to cry, go outside.
15.  Grooming counts.  Your nasty fingernails turns off customers.

hmm, ive been on the employER side enought times and agree with all but a few; in today's world, someone's job isn't thereir be-all end-all and a cell phone might avert a home crisis..I respect a family still comes first.
Casual is ok to me as I don't pay for someone's wardrobe and some people need food more than a fancy suit.
As for arriving on time? I'm a harder ass on that time....if you're early, you're on time and if you're on time you're late; arrive with enough time to BEGIN at your shift not set up for it

I agree with the points you made doc. Especially the nasty fingernails part.  Be Sick That's not a horrible boss to expect people to do what you pay them for.

If we don't have access to phones I can see dtsweet's point about family emergencies and also about attire. That's a nice boss to consider that not everyone can afford clothes.  Smiley It all depends on what job you're in.

I'd like to think I wasn't a horrible boss. I did have things that drove me crazy. I had an employee that asked the same questions repeatedly. Ugh made me so angry. Then, she would have her coat on and log off her computer and wait for the clock to strike 5. That didn't work with me and maybe she thought I was a horrible boss  Laugh out Loud

Doc, I agree with most of what you said.
If you need to cry, I don't mind.
I give special favors but to everyone on occasion, not favorites.

I had a neighbor work for me.  She was required to work at my home 4 hours a day, three times a week.  All extra work could be done from her home at her leisure.  After a couple of years, she took advantage and my business suffered.  I had to , very nicely, let her go.  She made up lies and turned several neighbor friends against me. That was a few years ago and I still don't talk to her.   My son was called in to pitch during the championship game yesterday.  Bases loaded, her son up to bat.  My son struck him out. Whoo-hoo!!

I've had a young employee (college student) who needed new tires.  I 'borrowed' her car and came back with 4 new tires and big red bows on each one. Smiley

I've had GREAT bosses.  Wonderful people.  Been very fortunate in that area.

Very sweet thing to do gabby! I am proud to kno ya!

I think it's tough for the boss too. It is almost like you are damned if you do and damned if you don't. It tough to reprehend and tough to accept as an employee you have done wrong and swallow your pride. In many cases it's much easier to blame the boss for wrong doing.

I don't think i ever had a boss that was impossible to work with knock on wood!

Thanks Froggy and Lips.

She was very thankful.

Shed a few tears. (Doc would not approve) Smiley
Gave me a hug. (Again, Doc would not approve) Smiley
Posted it on her facebook account, during work. (Yikes, Doc) Wink

I was happy for her and happy I could do something nice.  Some years finances let me do things and some years not so much.... I'm thinking there is someone who may be lurking and think that I was tooting my own horn.  Oh well.... I think it's perfectly fine to share the joy as well as hardships.

I could never work for Gabby.  I wouldnt be able to take my eyes off of her.  WTF, cancel that comment, I am old and senile.  I quit working in Corporate America in 2002.  I was a corporate controller and had enough of the verbal abuse from 4 different owners for depositing money, writing checks, preparing financial statements qand managing the accounting departments.  My last controller job was for a lesbian couple and one was the meanest person I met in my life.  I got into alot of trouble but I made an azz out of her.  Of course I announced Hitler was a great guy compared to her.  Only problem is I said that in front of a judge. I dont believe in violence or guns but to this day I could shoot her between the eyes and feel no remorse.

Laugh out Loud at cancel that comment. Laugh out Loud

I did have a manager once who must have had very low self esteem.  It was at a clinic where she wore high heels everyday....whatever.

Everything was, Step on MY scale, this is MY lab manager, I'll take you to MY x-ray room.  I could either let it annoy the crap outta me or laugh.  I did both.
