  • Hiya Guys and Dolls,

In todays society we have become very cautious as to not offend other people and there beliefs. For example some public establishments will not incorporate anything that has to do with the holiday season. No decorations, no happy holidays to customers or any reference to Christmas period.

The reason for this is to respect others who may be of another religion. Others reasons may be that for some the season is a sad one and they no longer celebrate do to loss of a loved one.  Other people may have given up the celebrating the season all together due to financial struggle.

Whatever the reason may be do you believe that all public places should not decorate or allow employees to make reference to Christmas?

On side of the coin i think that for the most part people who do wish others Happy Holidays are doing so with warmth and not trying to make a religious stance. On the other hand if a person is not of that faith they make take offense.

Do you think our society is being too sensitive with making reference to the holidays or are we not sensitive enough.

  • Lips....I'll take a shot at your (wonderful) question.

I think over-playing "happy holidays/ season's greetings" for fear someone might be offended is being hyper-sensitive.  The fact is that Christmas is a religious holiday to many Americans.  I am certainly not offended if someone wishes me "blessed Ramadan."

On the other hand, I think fundamentalist Christians need to realize there are people in America who don't practice Christianity.  There ARE Muslims, Jews, Hindus, etc. in our country.  Also, there are people who are secularists who are simply excising their Constitutional rights not to practice a religion.  So, DON'T fall apart if you bump into someone who isn't like you!!!  This is where sensitivity is needed.

In short, I believe diversity should be celebrated.  If you are a Hindu, for example, I would love to take you to lunch and learn about your faith.  And at the same time I would like to wish people "Merry Christmas" without a snobby lecture on tolerance!

  • I don't know how everything got so screwed up, not only with Christmas.  It was all so simple growing up, having Christmas spirit.  I guess the athiests and the terrorists have driven us to nostalgia instead of cheer.  Can't pray in school, can't have God in the Pledge of Allegiance to our flag, etc...  I guess our grandparents felt the same way about the times of their youth, compared to when we were little.  So much changes.
The following isn't a Christmas song- are we allowed to sing those anymore?  But it does make you think of the way we were:

    Mmm. Mmm.
Memories, light the corners of my mind
Misty watercolor memories of the way we were.
Scattered pictures of the smiles we left behind
smiles we give to one another
    for the way we were.
Can it be that it was all so simple then
or has time rewritten every line?
If we had the chance to do it all again
tell me would we? Could we?
Memories, may be beautiful and yet
    what's too painful to remember
    we simply choose to forget
So it's the laughter we will remember
    whenever we remember
    the way we were.

Hopefully I've not offended anyone...Merry Christmas.

  • Both fabulous replies.....thanks for expressing yourselves so eloquently!

  • I think that when most people mean "Merry Christmas" what most people are saying is "Happy Holidays." I think that most people mean no offense and wish everyone a happy one!

  • When I say Merry Christmas!  I mean I wish we could all be full of happy happy joy joy all year long, peace on earth!  Goodwill towards all men!

    I know it's a fantasy these days.  I know Jesus wasn't born Dec. 25th.

Heck, people still say "bless you" when someone sneezes (I don't and people act like I'm evil or something).  It's just a tradition.

I just saw that the atheists have put up huge billboards about how it's NOT REAL, to compete with the Catholics' billboards saying IT IS REAL.  I don't mind their debate, but I hate that they are ruining the magic and joy and peace and tradition.

  • The thing is even "happy holidays" can be insensitive to say because some people don't recognize it at all.

But the way i feel about it is that it's just warm wishes with no other intent. Maybe we should say Happy December?  tongue
