  • Reading some emails and I came across an email from Borders. For those unfamiliar with Borders, they are a major book store in the USA (I don't think they are international). Borders Express and Waldenbooks are also part of the same family.

Funny thing is, I don't even read books so God knows why I'm listed as a rewards member. I might have bought a cook book or a tabloid magazine years ago.  dizzy I used to love to hit the coffee shop and browse the sexy books................  exclamation

Anyway, do you think this is the beginning of the end for book stores? I'm surprised it hasn't happened sooner but it does me me sad. For those that have kids in school, are they required to buy certain books or are the Kindle, online versions, etc. acceptable?

Oh and by the way, going out of business sales start today and use up those Borders Bonus bucks by July 31st.

  • Hi Froggy,

I have a rewards card too. It's an automatic when you buy a book. I think you may be on to something that book stores could faze out.

With the current economy i think libraries are flourishing and for students purchasing books online are a lot cheaper then going to a book store or even the school store.

The internet has paved the way in more ways then one for us.  Unfortunately it is putting corporations out of business.

  • It has always been one of my favorite places where I could spend a whole day.
    What a disappointing!

  • It's a shame that one day the young people will have no idea what a newspaper or book look like.I love the w.w.w.and my comp but it's a shame that maybe because of them some of the simple pleasures in life way soon be gone for good.

  • What a shame to hear that.  We did have a large Borders store in the city but that closed a short while ago.

    Thanks for the info. Froggy.

  • I know that many other big box bookstores are shutting down also. Barns and Noble have been downsizing like many.

But how can you compete when you sell books at such prices and they can be ordered online at 30-50% savings?

For me personally, I have bought thick paperbacks from a local charity shop and pay only $0.25 cents per book and many arer quite still in great condition.

Some are usually only 6 months -1 year old some older, but I looked on the back of many and shake my head when I think someone paid $8.95 for this book I paid a quarter for.

  • it is sad but true, and also borders was in the uk too....

may i also add all books are in the process of being scanned onto computers and will be soon available online all books, a lot allready is for the ebook readers and so fourth, but you know those security tags when you do a sign up where you have to enter a specific word, well most websites actually get the words from old books that the words cant be read, so we are infact helping the online book market out by filling in those words, just thought i would add this interesting info hehehe

  • why on Earth would I want to lug around a book when my e-reader is the same size but thinner, holds 300 books and plays music too

I prefer books, I like to feel the paper and I never got used to the e-reader. So I hope that book stores won't die.
  • Bookstores still do well in Serbia. Not because we don't have or are not used to computers, readers or tablets, it's just that we all like the traditional smell of ink inside the book and the rustle of old, yellow paper under your fingers. Nothing can beat the feeling, and besides, after spending a whole day staring at a computer, who wouldn't enjoy taking a look at something less tiring than a screen? cheesy

For the same reason I despise change counters on fast food registers.  Kids can't count back money these days.

Reading in any form may be the same for some but for ME, picking up a book, dog earing the page and lugging it around is something I prefer to keep doing. smiley

    YES!

Are those bookshelves in the background of your photo?  Actual books filling rows of shelves?  Love it!  smiley
  • I got the same email...it did mention that it's closing was due largely  to electrinic books and computers...it sucks but I really think in the near future there will be no books period, everything will be on your computers...except casinos for usa players!

Yep, real book shelves with real books. And there's plenty more of these in my place. If we continue buying books at this pace, we'll turn our household into a library! cheesy
