As I have mentioned before, I do a little bit of slot play.  I certainly LOOSE money on slots.  I do great with Roulette, but not slots.

Anyway...I play basic slots.  I don't understand the 5 row video based slots.  I stick with 7s and fruit!  As I have played slots online and casinos I have noticed how many times I am "close" to the biggie.  Two 7s and the third 7 just one away!  Or two jackpots come up and the third wheel comes up just one away!  I especially see this at online casinos.

So,  my question is.....is this on purpose to keep you playing?  "Gosh, I almost hit it, I better keep feedin' the machine!"

Just me...or do you all notice it too?

The "Almost A Jackpot" syndrome. Undecided

Your talking about the three reel Slots, and not the video slots which are programmed and run by the Random Number generator.
Heres a borrowed example of how they work....

"Reel type slot machines have a number of spaces on each reel that contain appx. 22 physical stops.
Lets say that there are only 10 stops on each reel. With 10 stops there can be 1,000 different combinations. We get this number by multiplying the number of symbols on each reel. (10 x 10 x 10 = 1,000) The 1,000 combinations that can be attained are known as a cycle and this is the word that sometimes confuses a player into thinking that the machine has cycles of winning and losing.

The odds of a three number combination being picked are one in a thousand. Theoretically if you play 1,000 spins you should see each of these number combinations once. However we all know that this is not the case. If you played a million spins you would see that the numbers would even out to be closer to the actual probability.

This does not answer the question of why the machine always get SO CLOSE to that winning combination though does it? Doc? I wish I knew that answer too.  I don't know how that is done by the machine, But I am looking into it.

No, it's just the odds. I can't recall how many times I have been "ohhhh.baby..oh baby..Ohhh DAMN!" that close to a major win.

I have seen (Years past) the three 7's and even 4 sevens (At the mint on an 8 coin machine) and I only put in 5 coins..SMACK!!!

But I also have visited youtube and seen one guy get close a lot, but not hit and claim "Oh the machine is rigged"

I know it "seems" to be "Fixed" but there's been times playing I could do no wrong and then the next day, nothing was going right!.

You're fighting the odds and not the machine though. The machine is set with an RNG and that's simple math, yes a win, no a loss.
