I've played at a few casinos online over the past several months and there's one thing that I'm really unclear on. What in the world is the purpose of the so called play though or otherwise known as wagering requirements at online casinos?

Hi Critter,
Nothing in life is free...the casinos offer incentives to intice you to play at their casino. Free chips and bonuses for depositors have these terms to make it very difficult to collect on.
It's actually a marketing strategy that really pays off for the casino and more often than not does not pay off for the player.

Well, I have enough posts on here about bonuses, but let me take a crack at it again. If you like just to play, then bonuses are great because they can extend play time. But, if you are looking at making some money they can be highly problematic because of the aweful wagering requirements. Some require 20X bonus plus deposit. (That means if you deposit $100 and get $100 bonus, then you need to wager $4000!) Also, some online casinos DON'T count such games as blackjack, roulette or poker toward the wagering requirement...only slots counts. In short, wager bonues are a true case of READ THE FINE PRINT.
