  • I only use 3 online casinos and was wondering if any other US players have had this problem? I got hit for over $1000 from my checking account making it impossible for me to play for the next few weeks until I get a new card shipped here from the states. Charges ranging from adult sites to dietary supplements to hotels to a storage unit.

  • Unfortunately, cards are compromised all the time and it's much more common than you think. I understand that you only play at three online casinos but it doesn't necessarily mean that a breach took place at one them. It could happen at the level of the processor etc. It doesn't mean that your card info was stolen due to a recent transaction either. It could have been one from a few years ago. It all depends but I assume you got your money back from the bank?

Have you checked with your bank to see if they have received reports of card compromised? They might have some information.

  • im in cuba working so its not as simple as just filling out papers.. they were able to tell me the transactions but haven't gotten the money back just yet.. a few forms that I have to get faxed here, fill out and fax back.. I understand that it could have been from anything.. I just don't use my card for anything else.. I get per diem for expenses so checking account is primarily play money

  • That's exactly why i don't use my card at online casinos or online for that matter . I just don't trust the sites that much to attempt it  dizzy.

  • That happened to someone I know last year, who never does anything online.

They got "scanned" at an ATM she uses, and the thieves got their info from that.  A "scanner" is a little piece of hardware they put  on the actual ATM (or other type of card scanning) machine to get the info.  Some of them also use video cameras to record your PIN number as you punch it in.  The news even had a video of some guys doing it at a local ATM machine!!

It happened to me a few years ago when I paid a bill over the phone using my PayPal MC/Debit card.  They got me for about $1500, but with it being PayPal, my account was fixed super fast.

  • ouch.. ive heard of those things before.. even saw an article on people "forking" the ATM once.. I just never swipe my card anywhere so it caught me completely off guard.. and 2 of the 3 sites I use I got from here and never see anything but good things come from them

  • They are saying the new cards with the chip will help to reduce the chance of it being compromised when using out and about in stores etc.

My problem with the chip is it stays inside ATM machine until transaction is complete.....i am prone to leave it in machine and drive off ...........arggg!!

  • I can definitely see where that could cause a problem for someone prone to driving off without it already. I was already thinking about switching to a bigger bank and that right there might be enough reason for me to do so. I went with a smaller bank near my jobs main office because it was recommended. maybe ill give bank of America a try now

  • Just wanted to add that the chip & pin cards won't help with online card fraud. As far as crediting your checking account, they have 5 days to do so. You shouldn't be without that cash for long.

  • oh im good without the cash.. I get per diem for living expenses like food and smokes and such.. I just hate that I had to order a new card.. im working overseas on a naval base and it takes 3-4 weeks to get mail here... means other than the money I accrue here to get a free chip im gonna be without my playing time lol

The chip in the card can be compromised even easier. There is a hack where they can use a smart phone have the program running with the phone in a pocket, purse or whatever. They simply have to walk within a certain range of your card and they snag your info. Like searching for a wifi connection.

The reason why credit / debit crime is so common is that the card company's make money off of it. Anytime there is a fraudulent charge, the business that processed the transaction automatically gets stuck with the bill. They say that the business failed to do proper security checks. Didn't check I.D. or whatever the case may be.

Sometimes they even profit more by additionally holding the card owner partially or entirely responsible for the fraudulent charges. I'm not sure exactly why, but not everyone just gets all (in extremely rare cases people don't even get any) of the money back. After having a card compromised.

So you can see why this crime is so common and not much is done about it.

I strongly suggest that anyone doing online transactions use a prepaid card or an e-wallet of some kind. One that you keep no balance on and that you can easily add money to. When it comes time to make a purchase, you just transfer the money over. That way if the account is ever compromised, the most you can loose is only the amount of that single transaction. To get that, the thieves will either have to work really hard or get really lucky. To get only a little bit of money.
  • This happen to me a few times. The good thing was my bank call me and ask if i made charges in china and another country I forget which one and the amount was $200 something dollars. I told them no so they put a stop on my card and issue another one. My bank very good at monitoring charges and for most part i use 1 debit card and i have only the amount I'm depositing in a casino that's what that card is for. So i can transfer fund from one account to another. So if somebody try and use the card to make a purchase most likely it will decline because of insufficient fund. So the joke on them...

  • Well that could happend in million ways, but shady casinos might be the one. I am always careful where do I put my credentials in. Also, one casino which I wont mention asked my documents (ID, phone bill etc) eventho I got their 10$ chip for free, and managed to wager up to 400$. Funny thing is, I tried to lose money there but site wouldnt let me do so. Like i was super lucky or smth. Though it is a scam, and wolaaa few months after it they got blacklisted and shut down

  • This has happened to me before. Several  times in one year. That sucked as I had to get a new card each time. My bank didn't like that much. Anyway, Thankfully between my bank and CC company called me about those "weird" transactions. Ever since I quit using one site, my card has not been hacked for 3 yrs. This is a "credible" online site too. Still going strong. So, ya just never know.

  • Actually here in the US our chip technology isn't as hackable as you think.  It's not the old transmitter RFID chip that was once introduced.  It's like a USB drive chip, but works in a credit card reader.  It's not the tap technology that was once easy to steal from.

I will chime in yes, chip technology will make it harder to hack for those who only use there card at physical establishments.  Otherwise yes like Froggy said, it won't help with online transactions.

Otherwise yes I had my information stolen several times, then eventualy switched to Bitcoin and haven't looked back.  Mainly because i no longer have to expose my personal banking information or credit/debit card to buy these coins.
