Anyone have any idea what to do about checks drawn on a Canadian bank account
given to us in the US? I recently received a check from Las Vegas USA for $100 and tried to
deposit it in my bank and they were practically confused about what to do about it. Funny thing is,
about a year ago I deposited one from Grande Vegas in the same account and the funds were available the next day! Anyway, the teller was talking to a manager, I'm waiting in the drive up
line and sweating bullets too, I might add and they tell me it might be 6 weeks, $25 in fees, postage, AND this is the best part....I might have to pay fees from their end too. I then went to a check cashing place here in Tampa and that was no go either. So I don't know what to do. It might
cost me more than the check is worth with the fees I might have to pay. Any suggestions?

Not sure why they were confused. The check should be deposited like any other. Only thing is, there could be some fees involved depending on the bank. Foreign checks go through a different clearing process so you could end up paying fees that won't leave you with much cash from that check.
Also a lot of US banks won't take foreign checks via the ATM. Most of them scan the checks and won't take them. There may be some that do but I don't know of any off hand. -

Thanks guys, like I said, the teller wasn't sure exactly how to proceed and after talking with whom
I assume is a manager, she said it would have to go through "collections" and take about 6 weeks. Not to mention the numerous fees.....you get the picture. don't get me wrong, they were very polite about it but I just got the feeling they didn't get a whole lot of these. And of course they ask me what kind of check it was I told them the truth: "it's a payment" All I said, all they needed to know IMO ! Look, I don't mean to be an ass about this, but with the computers we have available you'd think they could look up the f****** account number and maybe call the bank because last time I checked we speak the same damn language and figure it out. Sorry guys, don't mean to rant but I could really use that 100 bucks. I won it fair and square. Okay, I have now officially ventilated.....I need a beer. -

I hate playing at casinos that give Canadian checks when you win. If they want your deposit then find a better way. I like Winaday/Slotland but i refuse to keep playing if that is the only option to be paid. There are other ways and some casinos have found them.

With smaller banks, it's not uncommon to be with fee after fee with Canadian checks, because they do process different from US checks.
The first thing I would not recommend, is DO NOT, and I repeat, DO NOT deposit them through an ATM or via your cell phone. The first part you agree to when your sign you agreements is not to deposit foreign checks through an ATM or your phone, because as stated before they are collected differently than a standard US check. This to me would be the fastest way to get your account closed.
I bank at 2 banks, my smaller bank account, which I use for everyday spending and my pay check. Requires that I pay then a $40 fee to process a Canadian check, because of the costs involved in processing a Canadian check.
On the other hand, my larger bank I bank at, still requires a fee, but it's only $5.35 vs $40.00. So in the long run I put my foreign checks into that account because the fee is smaller, and the tellers at least know how process them properly.
So my suggestion, if you can do it, is to find a larger bank. Like Bank of America, Wells Fargo, BB&T, or some larger network bank. You could probably get away with a less fee. Plus with my bank, they said because it wasn't a rather large check, it'd probably clear within 2 or 3 business days. Most of the Canadian checks I get are from Slotland, and are for normally $200 or under. So, so far I've had most of them clear within the day or two.
Also most check cashing stores, won't take a Canadian check either. Mainly because they know themselves that cashing these bad boys take big fees.
So my honest suggestion, don't deposit them into an ATM. All your going to do is possibly create a headache, and find a larger bank. -

Thanks for the advice guys, Cheetah, I'm going to look into maybe Wells Fargo, there's one right up the road. I don't want to have to start a new account just for a $100 check but I don't want to give up a 100 bucks either. What a PITA ! This is why I usually do the WU thing or ACH if they have it. Under the circumstances though, I think the check here was my only option. I'll keep trying and let you guys know how it turns out.

Thanks everyone for all the help I appreciate it, but I'm still not sure what to do. I don't have an account at Wells Fargo although they seem to be the best option. My bank was making me uncomfortable when I was waiting in line last week and then they tell me they're going to charge all these fees, wait 6 weeks B******* Ya feel me !?! If it comes down to it, I'll just start a checking acct. at WF and take my chances. This is such a bummer, I remember a few years ago getting a check from I think, Vegas Slot or Vegas 7 (MG) and they gave me a $200 check and it was drawn on Bank of Nevada. No problem at all. I'm going to keep working on this, let you know what happens........

If casinos are going to cater to the USA it should be them who makes it just as easy for us to get our money from them as it is for them to get our money from u when we deposit. A lot of casinos have found a way and others have not. The one who have not IMO just do not want to. It is a deterrent for some to cash out smaller winnings when you know you have to find a way to cash the check. Most of the time you play it back trying to get it up to a bigger amount that is worth all the hassle. Too much for me so i will stick to casinos that have an easier way to get my money. GL bongo and i am sorry you are going threw so much trouble.

I received a canadian check a month ago. I went to the bank and made the deposit via the teller. I asked when the check will be clear. He took a look at the check and told me that it depends on the amount and because it's a canadian check, it should take longer, up to 4 weeks. The check was $900. $100 is available and $800 was clear in about 3 weeks. And I paid for ZERO dollar in fee. I am banking with citibank btw.
