Visa Inc, a multinational corporation is commonly referred to as VISA (Visa International Service Association). This corporation has a listing in the NYSE under the name V. VISA is the world’s largest electronic payment network and manages payments for financial institutions, merchants, consumers, businesses and even some government entities.
VISA was originally launched in 1958 as the BankAmeriCard as part of the Bank of America’s credit card program. The credit card was the brainchild of one of the bank’s branch managers who realised that it would be relatively simple for the bank’s computer systems to prepare customer’s bills across a wide array of businesses instead of individual merchants preparing these accounts manually. The idea proved to be brilliant, and according to the Nielsen Report in 2006, Visa held 44% of the market share in credit cards and 48% of the debit card market share in the United States. The corporation operates out of San Francisco in California.
How does Visa Work?
The Visa credit cards work on the same principle that governs other credit card. The cardholder’s application needs to be approved by Visa before the cardholder can use it to make transactions. All purchases made in an online casino known as CNP or Cardholder Not Present transactions.Once the cardholder enters the credit card number, VISA uses the additional security provided by a tool called ‘Verified by Visa’ to establish whether the customer has a valid card with sufficient credit, the transaction is approved by Visa. In order for the transaction to be completed, the cardholder either confirms it with a signature or a Personal Identification Number to verify ownership of the card.
Every month, the cardholder is issued an account statement that details the purchases made during that billing period, any outstanding fees and the total amount due. The cardholder can choose to pay the total bill amount or a certain minimum amount payable by the due date to avoid late fines.
The Visa Corporation also offers a debit card for its clients. Like most other debit cards, this card can function as a credit card for online purchases as well as an ATM card. The debit card is slightly different from a credit card because it has direct access to your bank account. As soon as a purchase is made using a debit card, the purchase amount is immediately deducted from the bank balance. This ensures that your spending does not exceed your bank balance. These transactions are usually secured with PIN authentication.
