GBP2 million problem gambler loses new bid to sue bookie

Graham Calvert, a 29-year-old greyhound trainer and admitted compulsive gambler in the UK, made the headlines last year with his attempt to claim GBP 2 million from gambling group William Hill plc, alleging a lack of care in stopping him from telephone gambling....and losing. His litigation against the gambling company was thrown out, but this week his legal representative was back in court appealing the rejection of his suit.

Calvert was not personally in attendance because he is currently serving a two-year jail sentence on cocaine and firearms charges.

His current action in the London Court of Appeal was no more successful than his original litigation; his representative was refused permission to appeal to the House of Lords, and was ordered to pay William Hill's legal costs, starting with an interim payment of GBP 50 000, suspended temporarily pending a possible application directly to the Law Lords for leave to appeal
