An internal audit revealing one million dollars was unaccounted for resulted in the resignation of 27-year-old Kelly Harris, Australia-based financial officer of the Queensland Police Union.
The money had gone missing over the course of 6 months with allegations surfacing that the money was transferred into non-union bank accounts and used for online gambling and horse racing wagers.
Those that know Harris are surprised by the allegations having been unaware that he gambled and he did not have many assets.
Harris’ social media accounts have been deactivated and he has not commented on the allegations.
Union members were made aware of the fraud via email sent by union president, Ian Leavers.
The notification read:
“An issue was identified by the Queensland Police Union that related to a civilian staff member working as a finance officer, not a police officer, senior staff member or an elected official.
“Upon the issue being identified the QPU acted immediately and reported the alleged matters to various authorities, including the Queensland Police Service.
“Now that a person engaged to perform internal financial work for the union has breached that trust, we have acted swiftly.
“Rest assured, while we believe the exact amount involved in improper transactions is in the vicinity of $1 million, we continue to be in a financially secure and stable position and this incident will have no effect on our service delivery capabilities nor will it affect members’ dues.”

The addiction can be such a bad habit sometimes. I don't know if he steels to gamble or just steeling so much money that he didn't know what to do with them and started to gambling later but in both ways this is inexcusable. One million is such a huge amount and I wonder how he was not caught earlier but I guess that nobody...

Shame on him. He had a position of trust and he betrayed that trust. Addiction is bad enough, but the collateral damage that it causes when people feel their need so badly that they do almost anything to met the need the addiction. In this case, it appears that daily activities at this Police Union.will go on unscathed, but I doubt that is completely true. In any case, their will be much amends to make after all the damage has been identified. We can be grateful that no lives were lost with this particular addiction because that is not always the case.
