Back Downtown Vegas Casino Workers Vote to Strike

A vote strike took place on Thursday, March 27th and Culinary Union Local 226 members authorized a strike but no date has been finalized as to when it will start. It was nearly a clean sweep as 99 percent of the ballots were in favor of the strike.

Leaders of the union have been in negotiations with Casino owners since the contract expired in the summer of 2013. However an earlier tentative agreement was reached with LVH, MGM Resorts, Caesars Entertainment, Riviera, Tropicana, Treasure Island, and the Stratosphere.

Close to 12 establishments are effected in areas for Cooks, bartenders, laundry workers, porters who are still negotiating for contracts. Local 226 is comprised of thousands of bartenders, food service, housekeeping, cooks, porters located downtown and on the Strip.

Workers from the following Casinos participated in the voting process: Binions, El Cortez, Four Queens, Fremont, Golden Gate, Golden Nugget, Las Vegas Club, Las Vegas Plaza, Main Street Station, and D. Other workers from Margaritaville Bar on the Strip and linen service workers from Brady Laundries were also part of the strike decision.

“We are not done because the thousands of workers downtown and in the laundries do not have new contracts yet,” said Geoconda Arguello-Kline, Secretary-Treasurer of the Culinary Union. “We hope we can reach a fair settlement with the remaining unsettled houses very soon.”
