Back Bulgarian Lawmakers Approve Online Gambling Bill

With ban enforcement measures already being implemented

The Bulgarian lawmakers have approved an internet gambling regulatory measure and already started implementing internet blocks on unlicensed operators. After the regulations are finalized by the State Gambling Commission and approved by the Sofia Regional Court the ban will finally become effective.

A discussion at the second reading of the bill about its practicalities included the use of black lists in order to remove foreign and unlicensed operators from the local market.

Despite earlier protests by the ISPs and Internet action groups worried about the practice extending beyond internet gambling, the new law sets licensing requirements for all online casino operators, both Bulgarian and foreign, and makes provision for requests to Internet service providers to block access to unlicensed gambling websites.

What's more, the law involves clauses which will restrict gambling advertising even to licensed operators.

According to government advisers, the regulation of online gambling could bring another 100 million leva (Euro 50 million) of annual revenues to this Eastern European country budget.
